AFC Ajax have defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the UCL semi-final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Van de Beek scored in first half, that remained only goal of the match. Ajax Amsterdam will carry the advantage of away goal to the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.
Ajax have moved one step closer to lifting the UEFA Champions League title in the 2018-19 edition. This is remarkable performance by Ajax Amsterdam, who were written off from progressing ahead of the group stage of the UCL. If they turn out to be the UCL winners in this season, then it will be their 5th European Club Football title. AFC Ajax had won three consecutive titles in the 1970s, and they had last secured this honour in the 1994-1995 UCL season.
Spurs missed their main forwards Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, due to injury and suspension respectively. Tottenham were ordinary throughout the match on their home ground. They did not offer much resistance to Ajax’s attack in the first half. Mauricio Pochettino’s side staged a comeback in the second half. They could not score themselves, but kept the visitors’ lead to just one goal. The Lilywhites will hope to carry the fight from the 2nd half to the away game at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena. They will look to channel the performance displayed against Manchester City in the UCL semi-final. If they can play with that attacking and competitive intent, then Spurs can sucker-punch eliminate Ajax from the Champions League‘s current season.
