Spurs have eliminated Manchester City to book berth in the semi finals of the 2018-19 Champions League. Manchester City won the second tie of the quarter final by 4-3 against Tottenham Hotspur at City of Manchester Stadium. That meant that aggregate score from both ties was 4-4. Tottenham advanced to the UCL semi-final on the away goals rule. Sky Blues were haunted by their goal-less campaign in the first tie of the UCL quarter-final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Raheem Sterling provided early impetus for Manchester City with the opening goal on 4′. Celebrations of Sky Blues were short lived though Tottenham Hotspur counter-attacked immediately. Spurs got the lead with double goal by Son Heung-min on 7′ and 10′. Bernardo Silva kicked the equalizer goal for Man City on 11′. Raheem Sterling completed his own double with a goal on 21′ to move Sky Blues into lead. Manchester City remained in control of the UEFA Champions League tie versus Tottenham with 3-2 score on half time.
Tottenham Hotspur had the edge of lone goal win in the first leg of the UCL quarter final tie. Man City consolidated their lead in the second half with a goal by Sergio Agüero on 59′. A match scoreline of 4-2 meant an aggregate score of 4-3 in the favour of the Sky Blues. Fernando Llorente brought back Spurs in the game by scoring a goal on 73′. Scoreline read 4-3 with Sky Blues still in the lead. But the aggregate score now stood at 4-4. That meant Tottenham now had edge on the basis of away goals. Manchester City desperately tried to land knockout blow in the closing moments of the match. They were held back a solid Spurs defence though, and could not score another goal. Raheem Sterling netted his hat-trick attempt in the final moments, but was disallowed out on VAR, adjudging Sergio Agüero was offside early on. Man City won the match by 4-3, but that was not enough in the end.
An aggregate score of 4-4 signaled that tie result decided on the away goals rule. Sky Blues had not scored a goal in 1-0 defeat during the first leg at Spurs home Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Tottenham did score three goals though in losing effort at City of Manchester Stadium, home of Man City. Tottenham Hotspur have advanced to the UCL semi final, to keep their Champions League title bid on track. Manchester City bow out of the prestigious European football tournament. Quadruple hopes of Pep Guardiola’s team are dusted though.
