Former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw explained how the 2007 Rugby World Cup quarter-final defeat against France in Cardiff was the best thing to do in rugby. “In response of worst thing happened to me in Rugby, I talked about the 2007 World Cup quarter-finals. However, I probably said it was one of the best things that happened to me,” said McCaw.
Because I would not have put the time, effort and work on what’s been going on for the next. I do not think the All Blacks would have been successful for next years if we had not lived this.
“It showed you how difficult it is to win a Rugby World Cup. It puts that in perspective. You never took anything for granted after that.”
The referee Wayne Barnes has since admitted that the decision not to call a pass forward in the perspective of a try-out for France in this match was his greatest regret.
I think maybe the biggest mistake was in 2007 when there was a pass ahead of a French test against New Zealand. Ali Williams, the former coach of the test team, spoke of turning pressure into privilege as the All Blacks headed to the World Cup in 2011, their first title since 1987.
As the team began the task of making amends and winning the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Williams recalls how focused McCaw was during the tournament.
“Richie McCaw, a good friend of mine, and he is sitting behind me on the bus,” said Williams.
Williams said, I think it was in the semifinals, he arrived and said, hi, buddy. And I replied, oh you are back, nice to meet you, nice to see you. That’s how he handled the situation, obviously, he was putting a lot of pressure on his shoulders.
McCaw then led the All Blacks to consecutive World Cup victories in 2015 before retiring from rugby as one of the greatest players of all time.
