Manager of Tottenham, Mauricio Pochettino says Barcelona remain the team to beat in this year’s Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino thinks that Barcelona is on a different level to Manchester United and has marked the La Liga side as favourites.

United and Barcelona meet in the quarter-finals, a recap of the 2009 and 2011 final when the Spanish side came out on top twice.

All four English teams made it during the last eight, with Pochettino’s Tottenham pinched to face Premier League rivals Manchester City.

The city remains the bookmaker’s favourites to win the contest for the very first time, but Pochettino has ideas.

Speaking in Barcelona, where Tottenham depleted time preparation last week, Pochettino said: “If there is one favourite team to win Champions League it’s Barcelona. Valverde is doing a good job. They have players of an amazing level, and then they have Lionel Messi. Messi fans have got their Champions League Tickets to support the legend.

“You have terms such as Manchester City or Juventus that will always have the probability to win the contest because they are teams who are measured to do that. There is always space for surprises.

“Manchester United is the team that has been built to win big things. After all winning consequence contests such as the Champions League or Premier League always depends on the small details.

“Of course they have players capable to make things difficult for Barcelona. But I think Barcelona is a step higher than Manchester United.”

“It is not a tie between a big and small side. And we should not look back to what happened last season when they knocked us out of the competition.

“We have great respect for Liverpool and every other club involved in the Champions League. But I believe the other teams also respect Porto. They should know we have top players competent in facing any other side.

Juventus edge Atletico Madrid to reach UCL Quarter Finals

Two time European football champions Juventus edged Atlético Madrid to enter UEFA Champions League quarter finals. Juventus football club outclassed Atlético 3-0 at Juventus Stadium in Turin. Paris Saint-Germain F.C. head coach Thomas Tuchel was left to rue the lost opportunities.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær said: “We always believed. We set out our plan, and it wasn’t about keeping the ball. The plan was to get the first goal and be in the game in the last five or ten minutes – and we were. Fred and McTominay were excellent, screening their high midfielders. That was probably Fred’s breakthrough performance. [Sir Alex Ferguson] is happy and proud as well. This is how we do things at Manchester United. We can go all the way, but we just have to wait for the draw. You can’t really hope for anyone or not want anyone. All the teams are quality. Six goals in three games [for Lukaku] – not bad. Four time European football champions Ajax will fancy another shot at UEFA Champion League title glory in 2018-19 edition.

AFC Ajax started the match brilliantly by attacking the defending champions Real Madrid right from onset in first half. Hakim Ziyech scored opening goal on 7’ with Dusan Tadic assist, to equalize aggregate score. David Neres kicked second goal on 18’ with the help of Tadic, to move Ajax into lead on aggregate. Los Blancos counter-attacked multiple times, but could not convert. Scoreline read 0-2 in favour of visitors AFC Ajax on half time. Dortmund have been eliminated twice from their last three appearances in Round of 16 stage (last suffering this fate in 2014-15 UCL edition).

Borussia Dortmund started the match superbly by attacking the opponent on multiple occasions in first half. Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris made saves against Marco Reus, Julian Weigl Mario Gotze and Jadon Sancho. Spurs defenders Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies also thwarted the attacks of Reus and Weigl. Borussia Dortmund kicked five clear shots at Tottenham goal in later stages of the first half. It was brilliance of Hugo Lloris that helped Spurs block all Borussia attempts of scoring before break.

Spurs attacked on Borussia Dortmund in the second half right from start. Son Heung-Min made an early effort that went just wide of the post. Borussia Dortmund (BVB) had a mammoth task on hand after conceding 4-0 lead for UCL quarter-final qualification. But they could not score as Spurs employed solid defence. Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris was judged man of the match for his excellent performance as goalie.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said: “We are in the quarter-finals. I’m so happy for the players, and the fans. It’s an important victory. Of course we suffered a bit but it’s OK and we fully deserve to be to be in the quarter-final. Hugo Lloris was great. We conceded more chances than we expected but that’s football. After losing in the first leg they had nothing to lose. In the last 10 minutes of the first half it was difficult for us. They started to play a little but more and then in the first action when we were able to connect we managed to score the goal. Now it’s about enjoying that we are in the quarter-final. We need to feel proud.”
