Will Skelton could still line up for Australia at this year’s World Cup in Japan, although he signed a two-year contract extension with the English Premiership club Saracens earlier this month. Now sports lovers who want to support their favourite teams can book Rugby World Cup Tickets online.
The 27-year-old London club has taken on a spectacular form this year and played an important role in the success of the European Champions League title against Leinster three weeks ago. As well as in the race for a second consecutive Premiership final, where they will face Exeter’s leaders at Twickenham on Saturday.
His form was so good that head coach Mark McCall was forced to send England’s second rower. Maro Itoje to the side of the blindside to welcome Skelton into the starting lineup.
His former physique and physique have not gone unnoticed by his former Waratahs and current Wallabies coaches, Michael Cheika. He would sue his former player to bolster his second-place World Cup.
Already without controversial backhand Israel Folau, and with the imminent availability of flanker David Pocock, who continues to battle a rare calf injury, the Wallabies lack power in their national team. The acquisition of Skelton would, therefore, be vital.
However, with only 18 test selections, Skelton is not eligible for a call to the Wallabies when he plays for Saracens, as he has not reached the 60-test threshold required for players based abroad to represent Australia.
To participate in this year’s World Cup, Skelton would need to sign a deal with an Australian Super Rugby franchise to secure his future in Australia.
Exeter midfielder Nic White was faced with the same situation earlier this season, but by qualifying for an Australian team in the Super Rugby campaign in 2020. He qualified for the World Cup selection.
He is eager to play in the World Cup, but he also likes to play for the Saracens, which is quite complex. There has not been much contact with Australia, but I think there will be and we want our players to play in the World Cup.
“For that to happen he probably has to sign in the longer term, which is not what we want. But if that’s what Will decides, that’s what he decides.”
His Saracen team-mate Iotje was impressed by Skelton throughout the season but said that if the two men met on the international stage, there would be no mercy between them.
“When I see him playing and I see him wearing and I see him hitting people, I am happy that he is on my side rather than the opposition,” said Itoje.
I had already played against him before and that was when he was not in this type of figure. Even then, he had a lot to do. Now he had a huge impact on the whole team.
