Lionel Messi criticized Barcelona fans for the treatment of Philippe Coutinho after his Champions League 3-0 victory over Liverpool. More than 98,000 spectators gathered in Camp Nou to attend a class of Messi master, who scored twice in the second half to leave Liverpool, needs a minor miracle next Tuesday at Anfield.
Despite the score, Liverpool dominated much of the match and forced Barcelona to change system shortly after the interval to stem the flow of attacks from the Reds. While Luis Suarez opened the match against his former club, Coutinho, the former Liverpool star, was less impressive and was replaced at the hour of play by a chorus of whistles and whistles from the crowd. Messi is a close friend of Coutinho and the Argentinean has reproached his own supporters for attacking the midfield.
“It’s a time when we have to be more united than ever, both as players and as fans,” said Messi shortly afterwards. “It’s something we have to do together and this is not the time to criticize anyone.”It’s ugly to see treat a teammate like this.
Barcelona takes a solid three-goal lead over Anfield and Liverpool will have to produce something special to secure their place in the Madrid final. Messi, however, said the match was not over and warned his teammates to expect a tough match against a tough Anfield. “We know it’s not decided,” said Messi. “We still have to go to a very difficult stage, but we are very happy.”
