Melbourne coach Dave Wessels said Haylett-Petty was incredibly valuable to the Rebels.
Wessels said, “He has a real presence on the team.”
“He does not say much but the team is drawn to him and one of the reasons we have been better at handling pressure situations is because Dane is there. He leads the team through and all the world follows him.”
Asked about his ambitions to play the test-back position rather than the wing as he adds 29 selections. 29-year-old Haylett-Petty said he would like to be anywhere on the team, although he has admitted to being in the back.
“I like playing in the back and engaging a bit more – it’s hard to stay out of the game,” said the 29-year-old.
Haylett-Petty missed a month of games due to a toe injury, only coming back two games. He said that being on the bench had the benefit of feeling fresh both mentally and physically.
“It was disappointing to miss these weeks, but the advantage was that I was able to come back when everyone was a bit tired,” he said.
The Rebels have a problem with the injured five-eighths of Quade Cooper suffered a concussion after his head hit the Reds centre Samu Kerevi knee.
Wessels said Cooper was feeling good after the match, but he would be following the path of concussions, which could put him in doubt for Friday’s home game against the Bulls.
